Flu vax in hospital post-MI reduces further events: study

Largest trial to date underscores the value of protecting patients with heart disease from influenza.

AusDoc brings you the latest news from the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2021.

Inoculation against influenza for patients hospitalised with recent MI reduces the risk of death and subsequent cardiovascular events, a trial suggests.

The largest randomised study of its kind, the trial found those receiving the vaccine while in hospital were 41% less likely to die from cardiovascular or any cause over the ensuing 12 months compared with those receiving a placebo saline injection.

The primary endpoint of the study – a composite of all-cause death, MI or stent thrombosis – was met by  5.3% of patients in the vaccinated group compared with 7.2% of controls, a 28% reduced risk for the vaccinated, the ESC Congress 2021 was told.
