Fluctuating total cholesterol and triglycerides is associated with an increased risk for incident Alzheimer disease and other dementias, according to a US study.

Those with the most variations in cholesterol had a 19% higher chance of developing Alzheimer’s or Alzheimer disease-related dementias, the researchers found.

And those with the most fluctuations in triglyceride levels had a 23% increased risk, the findings in Neurology show.

Lead researcher Dr Suzette Bielinski (PhD), from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, believes the findings may help in understanding underlying mechanisms.
