‘For a non-stick frying pan, it’s not worth it’: GP on the lives being lost in Wreck Bay Village
Wreck Bay Village is home to a small community. The population is around 300 but according to its one-time GP, lives are being lost to cancer caused by so-called ‘forever chemicals’.
These chemicals are a group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that have been used across the world in consumer products and manufacturing processes since the 1950s.
As The Guardian put it last year, they allow grease and dirt to slide off carpets and textiles, they protect industrial equipment from heat damage and corrosion, and they help to smooth and condition the skin.
But alarm has grown over the health harms they cause, not least because they can take hundreds of years to degrade once part of the environment.
