Another former health minister takes Coalition leadership

Ms Ley is the Liberal Party's first female leader.

Having once succeeded Peter Dutton as health minister, Sussan Ley has now succeeded her former boss as Liberal Party leader.

The member for Farrer since 2001, she took over the health portfolio in 2014 after the GP co-payment debacle doomed Mr Dutton’s time as minister.

She started with a notorious photo shoot of her wearing a surgical glove, as though primed to perform a digital rectal examination, under the headline ‘The minister will see you now’.

She oversaw the launch of the original MBS Review Taskforce during a review-heavy time for health policy while maintaining the Medicare freeze that had started under the Labor Government in 2013.
