Fresh fears over medical indemnity as some specialties see 20% premium hikes

AMA NSW said some specialists have shifted away from subspecialties to reduce their costs.

There are fresh concerns about medical indemnity premium hikes with some specialties seeing increases of 20-40% year-on-year.

Neurosurgery, bariatric surgery and obstetrics were worst affected.

AMA NSW president Dr Michael Bonning said while private practitioners could “probably stomach” two years of a 20% increase, they would not be able to sustain this longer-term.

“If we’re sitting five years down the track and your premium has actually more than doubled and you’re looking at more like 220% of your original premium, that’s a really big change,” he said.
