From cave rescuers to POWs: Why so many doctors end up as Australian of the Year
Doctors and medical researchers have won the award 15 times.
It has been a bumper year for the medical profession in the Australian of the Year Awards.
Five of the eight nominees are practising doctors — the most ever nominated in a single year, according to organisers.
If one of them is named Australian of the Year, they will join at least 15 other doctors and medical researchers to receive the honour across the award’s 65-year history.
Their predecessors include cave rescuers, revered war heroes and Nobel prize-winning virologists and immunologists.
