An ED nurse died after contracting COVID-19 in what the nursing federation claims is the first fatality of a Victorian hospital worker from the virus.

Gillian ‘Jill’ Dempsey died in ICU at Melbourne’s Box Hill Hospital on Sunday afternoon, her employer Eastern Health said.

It said Ms Dempsey was a beloved “colleague and friend”, working as a night-shift nurse in the Angliss Hospital ED in the city’s east.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation’s Victorian Branch said Ms Dempsey was understood to be the first Victorian-based hospital worker to die from COVID-19.
