Australia’s first dedicated cardiac hospital has been described as a “game changer” for heart health, ahead of its opening this week.

Following a similar model to specialist cancer hospitals, the 206-bed Victorian Heart Hospital in Melbourne integrates clinical cardiology services, research and education in a centre of excellence.

Program director of the $577 million facility, cardiologist Professor Stephen Nicholls, says the hospital has been set up to reduce deaths from cardiac causes.

“This hospital is a game changer, and will truly be the heart of cardiac care and research in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere,” Professor Nicholls said in a statement.
