General practice crisis: Health Minister names the ‘most terrifying statistic’ in healthcare

The Minister for Health has acknowledged that the state of general practice is repelling doctors from GP training, saying primary care is “in worse shape than it’s been in the entire Medicare era”.
At the AMA National Conference on Saturday, Mark Butler pledged to make both general practice and aged care his top priorities over the first term of the government.
“The most terrifying statistic in healthcare, which is replete with terrifying statistics, is that fewer than 15% of [medical] students want to be a GP,” he said.
“When I was at university, it was 50%.
