First general practice subspecialty officially recognised

The new field of specialist practice formally appeared on the Medical Board of Australia's list of specialties on Monday.

Rural generalism has joined the list of medical specialties as a subset of general practice after seven years of work by ACRRM and the RACGP.

The two GP colleges agreed back in 2018 to collaborate on seeking formal recognition of rural generalism, which finally came to fruition this month when the nation’s health ministers agreed to acknowledge rural generalism as a field of specialty practice inside general practice.

It was formally added to the Medical Board of Australia’s list of specialties on Monday.

The board said it considered rural generalists doctors who provided comprehensive GP care, emergency care and care in at least one more field, such as anaesthesia, obstetrics, surgery or mental health.
