The 11-year-old "almost certainly" picked up the infection at the popular Italian tourist attraction, say case report authors

An 11-year-old girl “almost certainly” contracted gonorrhoea from bathing in a popular natural hot pool, a forensic physician reports.

The case highlights the importance of considering the possibility of non-sexual transmission in cases of gonorrhoea, the authors say.

The Austrian girl developed vulvovaginitis two days after spending an hour lying in one of five hot pools at the edge of a volcanic crater lake on Pantelleria Island in Italy.

The pools at the lake, Specchio di Venere (Mirror of Venus), are a popular tourist attraction with up to five people bathing in each of the five pools, both adults and children.
