GLP-1 RA use linked to higher risk of chronic cough
GLP-1 receptor agonists delay gastric emptying but can also make users feel like they have something stuck in their throat.
A large observational study of more than two million people with type 2 diabetes has found that those prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) were more likely to develop chronic cough in the years after starting treatment.
The findings raise fresh questions about reflux-mediated respiratory symptoms in this growing patient group.
The study found that 1.6% of GLP-1 RA users developed chronic cough over five years compared with 1.3% of those taking other diabetes medications.
