GLP-1 RAs get boxed warning about the risk of rare but serious eye condition
Regulators in Europe and the UK have also issued warnings about an association between the medications and ischaemic optic neuropathy.
A boxed warning about a rare condition that can trigger sudden vision loss is being added to GLP-1 receptor agonists, the TGA says.
The warning says the drugs may increase a patient’s risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), with an extended warning on semaglutide that patients with a pre-existing anatomical predisposition called ‘disc at risk’ are at the highest risk.
The TGA has received 23 reports of ischaemic optic neuropathy involving patients taking semaglutide, 10 reports involving tirzepatide use and three involving liraglutide.
“No cases were found for dulaglutide, though one semaglutide case had a history of prior dulaglutide use,” the watchdog says.
