Good-hearted geriatricians and antisocial radiologists: Do medical stereotypes have any value?

Researchers say the stories doctors tell about one another can bring a group together.

From arrogant surgeons to shy radiologists, brash anaesthetists and good-hearted geriatricians, intra-professional medical stereotypes endure. 

But they’re more than just comic fodder for Dr Glaucomflecken who has built a comedy career on his typecast characters such as the “ortho bro”. 

Researchers in Denmark say the stories doctors tell each other have an impact, with some negatively impacting collaboration by perpetuating stereotypes, while others positively facilitate teamwork.

Below are the results of their interviews with doctors as well as their observations of tearoom medical chats.
