Doctors treating Jehovah’s Witnesses have new transfusion options after the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses said followers could use their own blood for medical procedures.

The beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses are arguably one of the most common reasons doctors go to court seeking emergency treatment orders for children, given the denomination tells followers to reject blood transfusions, even when they may be life-saving.

This view is based on Bible passages in both the Old and New Testaments that say to “abstain” from blood, which other Christian denominations have instead interpreted as references to Jewish dietary laws.

However, in March, the governing body explicitly declared followers could accept autologous blood transfusions.
