Minister reveals universal bulk-billing loading will be split 50-50 between GPs and practice owners

The RACGP called the news 'disappointing'.

The cash from a 12.5% loading on Medicare rebates generated by GP practices that embrace universal bulk-billing will be equally split between GPs and practice owners, the Federal Government has announced.

The loading is part of its masterplan to boost bulk-billing rates, having declared that it will increase the number of universal bulk-billing GP practices from 1600 to 4800 by 2030.

The loading will be integrated into the Practice Incentives Program on 1 November, but until Friday nobody had been told how the money would be divided between GPs and practice owners.

For a practice to qualify, all its GPs must universally bulk-bill all eligible MBS services, which cover most GP consultation and care plan items.
