Govt to let GPs bypass $900 CPD fee

Campaigners, such as Dr Michael Daly, say new Medicare legislation means they will no longer have to join the college's CPD program

Thousands of doctors will no longer be forced to sign up to either ACRRM or the RACGP’s CPD programs to ensure their patients can access VR-level Medicare rebates.

Under current rules, both the colleges are tasked with informing Medicare if a GP has completed the necessary CPD to remain on the vocational register.

However, in order to collect and pass on the information, they demand non-members join their CPD programs which currently cost more than $900-a-year in the case of the RACGP.

The arrangement has fueled a long-running campaign by a group of GPs who claim the actual administrative cost in collecting the data is little more than $50-a-year.
