Govt needs to jazz-up vax campaign, say doctors

Australia's ads need some humour or celebrity pull, like the UK's use of Sir Elton John, say the AMA's Dr Chris Moy and media GP Dr Norman Swan

Doctors want the Federal Government to improve its COVID-19 vaccination ad campaign, amid a wave of vaccine hesitancy among Australians, who are “sitting ducks” until a large proportion are vaccinated.

The national campaign, featuring former deputy chief medical officer Dr Nick Coatsworth and other doctors, has come under fire for failing to inspire Australians to roll up their sleeves.

AMA deputy president Dr Chris Moy says some overseas campaigns have been “bloody fantastic” and are exactly what Australia needs to overcome vaccine hesitancy.

Campaigns from the UK, Singapore and New Zealand (see below videos) have used celebrity power and humour, as well as diverse everyday characters, to promote the vaccine as the way out of the pandemic.
