Govt pauses controversial overhaul of NDIS assessments

There were concerns GPs would have been excluded under the shift to independent assessments for disability support

The Federal Government is pausing plans to overhaul the process for assessing patients’ eligibility for the NDIS, which would limit input from GPs.

The reforms would demand all participants undergo standardised assessments from the middle of this year.

Conducted over three hours by allied health professionals contracted by the government, the assessments would include interviews and in-home evaluations of people’s disabilities.

Reports would then to be sent to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to determine the level of funding and support.
