Australia’s pandemic inoculation strategy could be overhauled to use the Moderna mRNA vaccine for boosters targeting virus variants after the Federal Government signed a deal for 25 million doses.

But there is no news yet on whether GPs will be administering the vaccine, known as mRNA-1273, which can be stored for 28 days in a standard vaccine fridge.

Asked at his weekly webinar whether GPs could offer the Moderna vaccine, deputy chief medical officer Professor Michael Kidd said it was “too early to say”.

The vaccine was being used in the US, the UK and Singapore but was not part of the Australian Government’s original suite of vaccine deals.
