Govt unveils rules for billing COVID-19 vaccination MBS items

The items will fund 'suitability assessments' rather than the administration of the vaccine itself

Full details of the 16 new bulk-billed Medicare items for COVID-19 vaccination have been revealed by the Federal Department of Health.

The GP items will fund patient ‘suitability assessments’ for vaccination rather than the administration of a vaccination.

It means patients can be billed under the same item more than once if they do not go through with the vaccine the first time.

The department says the service will have to be billed in the name of the supervising GP who must be present at the location at which the vaccine suitability assessment is undertaken.
