GP alert after patient has lead poisoning from erectile dysfunction remedy

The Penisole capsules the Victorian man bought from an international website contained 1000 times the recommended safe level of lead

GPs are being urged to ask patients if they use complementary medicines purchased online after a man experienced lead poisoning from taking an Ayurvedic remedy for erectile dysfunction.

When laboratory tested, the capsules contained 1000 times the level allowed by the TGA for listed complementary medicines, Victorian Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Angie Bone said in an alert last month.

While the remedy, known as Penisole, is not registered for use in Australia, capsules can be bought online and imported from overseas websites.

Dr Bone stressed that doctors were required to notify the Department of Health and Aged Care within five days of a patient recording blood lead levels above 5μg/dL.
