New COVID-19 isolation guidelines for GPs allowing those classed as close contacts to return to work have also changed what constitutes ‘high-risk’ exposure to the virus.

With older isolation rules crippling workforces as Omicron cases exploded, National Cabinet decided last week to allow close contacts in critical industries â€” like general practice â€” to keep working.

The previous GP guidelines spelt out 24 different COVID-19 exposure scenarios that GPs were expected to analyse to decide whether to isolate.

But new guidelines, published by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) this week, state most contact with a COVID-19 patient would be considered low risk.
