GP-led ADHD care improving access for children, Aussie study suggests

Participating GPs completed 12 days of clinical training at an ADHD clinic, as well as a four-module course.

ADHD-trained GPs have “substantially improved” access to care, with children waiting an average of just three weeks for their first appointment, a NSW study has found.

The prospective study followed the first 207 children aged 4-17 diagnosed with ADHD by four GPs in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District between 2023 and 2026.

Under the model, GPs were trained to diagnose, initiate treatment and provide ongoing management for children and adolescents with uncomplicated ADHD.

Patients with severe psychiatric comorbidity, severe tic disorders, or medical contraindications to stimulant prescribing were excluded.
