Doctor mistakenly gave parents take-home oxycodone after baby’s circumcision, tribunal finds
A doctor mistakenly gave parents a syringe of liquid oxycodone instead of paracetamol following their newborn’s circumcision, landing the baby in hospital, a tribunal has found.
The doctor, whose practice only performed circumcisions, was given a six-month suspension.
The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard that, in 2023, the doctor had the bottles of liquid oxycodone and paracetamol next to each other when he had drawn up what he thought was 0.5ml paracetamol for the parents to administer at home.
He discovered the mix-up after the family had left after the circumcision and had administered the drug.
