GP placements for medical students ‘too little, too late’

Tisshapaa Sivagnanan wants to be a rural generalist.
As a medical student, she completed two GP placements in North and Central Queensland, then a six-week stint in the Torres Strait that made her mind up.
But the Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) president says many students still treat general practice as the backup plan.
“I think it is changing, I am hearing more and more students say, ‘I want to go into general practice; I want to go into rural practice.’
