‘GP practice owners should need a licence to operate’

Dr Paul Mara argues it would stop entrepreneurs targeting the MBS by setting up practices in communities with no unmet medical needs

Does Australia need a licensing system for owners of GP practices?

Dr Paul Mara says it would function as a quality-control mechanism to ensure that only those with the skills and integrity run GP practices.

But he also argues it would prevent dodgy entrepreneurs milking the MBS by setting up practices in communities where there are already enough doctors.

Current director of accreditation agency Quality Practice Accreditation, the NSW GP pitched the idea to MPs last month at an inquiry into rural doctor shortages.
