GP practices finally given payroll tax reprieve — but only in Queensland

Queensland's Treasurer is reportedly lobbying other states to follow suit

Hundreds of GP practices in Queensland have received a two-year exemption from paying payroll tax following a long campaign by doctors.

The U-turn follows fears that practices would be driven out of business, with the new tax demands running to millions of dollars in some cases.

The state revenue office executed a partial back-down in January, saying it would limit any retrospective audits on general practices to the 2021/22 financial year.

But now clinics in Queensland have been issued a grace period lasting until June 2025, backdated for five years to June 2020.
