GP practices needing more intensive support, warns PHN

GPs are increasingly in need of external support to run their practices as they struggle to keep up with Medicare billing requirements and other red tape, a primary health network says.

The Western NSW Primary Health Network (PHN) says one-third of the 110 practices in its region require intensive support for back-office admin.

The network’s CEO Andrew Coe says the desperation was being driven in part by staff losses, with at least 15 experienced practice managers now retired or moved on since COVID-19.

“When they leave a practice, it becomes problematic because often they were doing a lot of back-office functionality … and so practices are challenged because they don’t have that skillset or knowledge,” he told AusDoc.
