The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 could reach around 11,000 in just two weeks time, according to projections by academic GP Dr Michael Tam.

Each day, the conjoint senior lecturer at the University of NSW, Sydney, models the trajectory of Australian case numbers compared with six other countries and shares them on social media.

In his latest update, released on Thursday, based on conservative modelling using Australian data since 1 March, he says the number of cases may hit around 5000 in two weeks.

But in a second, “more responsive” model using data from just the past seven days, the number skyrockets to about 11,000 cases.
