GP prescribing rights for kids’ asthma inhaler finally restored

GPs can once again prescribe subsidised Flixotide Junior and Axotide Junior to children under six after the PBAC’s controversial restrictions were officially scrapped over the weekend.
On 1 July, the PBS listing for the preventers — both containing fluticasone propionate 50µg per actuation inhalation, 120 actuations — was moved back to streamlined authority required.Â
The ban on GPs initiating PBS scripts for the inhaled corticosteroids in young children without non-GP specialist input was also lifted.
But some restrictions have stayed, including the rule that older children will only be eligible for PBS scripts if they started treatment and were stable on it before the age of six.
