GP reveals ‘spine-chilling’ misdiagnoses in pharmacists’ script trial

Cairns-based Dr Aileen Traves says several patients have been put at risk due to the Queensland's UTI pharmacy prescribing pilot

A GP has described how a patient with an undiagnosed pregnancy was prescribed trimethoprim by a pharmacist in the Queensland UTI trial.

Cairns GP Dr Aileen Traves says not only was the patient prescribed an unrecommended antibiotic for the first trimester, but she was also misdiagnosed as having a UTI when she had chlamydia.

The patient, who was interviewed within earshot of multiple other customers, was also allegedly upsold cranberry tablets, according to an RACGP statement put out on Monday.

“She came to see me when the symptoms did not resolve after taking the antibiotics and I had to take it from there.
