GP sparks furore with ‘mothers shouldn’t be full-time surgeons’ jibe

A GP in the UK has faced global scorn after saying mothers should not become full-time surgeons while calling for male medical student numbers to be ‘evened up’.
In a since-deleted post on Twitter, published on International Women’s Day, Dr Jeremy Newman wrote:
“Women aren’t weak but full-time surgeon isn’t an appropriate career choice for mothers.
“The job doesn’t pay enough for the entourage required to support such a demanding role and it’s too hard.”
