GPs and practice staff who are deemed close contacts of COVID-19 cases will be allowed to continue working under changes being considered today by National Cabinet.

The proposal comes amid concerns about practices being crippled as a result of staff being forced into isolation.

With national active cases reaching 696,000 yesterday, GP leaders have also held a crisis meeting with Minister for Health Greg Hunt to warn him about the pressures GPs are under.

They demanded a major expansion of MBS telehealth and new funding to manage the flood of patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
