GP supervisors have made an in-principle agreement to provide registrars with comparable base pay to hospital doctors but have left open the question of who pays if salaries rise.

The pledge is a step towards breaking the multi-year deadlock over minimum contracts between the GP Supervisors Australia (GPSA) and GP Registrars Australia (GPRA).

These have been on hold since 2018, when the GPRA walked out of negotiations declaring it wanted to “reset” the agreement, with pay a major issue.

As a result, practices remained bound by a deal inked in 2016, which could leave GP registrars $15,000 worse off than their hospital counterparts, according to the GPRA.
