GP suspended for helping terminally ill wife end her life

The NSW doctor became involved after realising she could not go through with her planned suicide without assistance

A GP has been suspended after assisting his terminally ill wife with her suicide and hiding his involvement for three years.

Based on the NSW Central Coast, the GP came to the attention of health regulators in 2018 after he was sentenced to a 12-month intensive correction’s order for aiding and abetting the nurse practitioner’s suicide.

With terminal cancer and experiencing nerve pain and difficulty swallowing, the GP’s wife had made it clear to family and friends that her life would end “on her terms”, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard.

On the morning of her death, in July 2014, she gathered her family to say goodbye, telling the GP it was time after they had left.
