GP suspended over ‘inappropriate’ skin cancer surgeries

'I failed with eight of my patients,' he told the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal

A GP working as a skin cancer doctor has been banned from cryotherapy, cautery, suturing, laser treatment as well as performing skin excisions after eight of his patients experienced complications, one of whom later died.

The doctor, who had RACGP fellowship, underwent training through the Australasian College of Cutaneous Oncology where he obtained a certificate in skin cancer surgery.

He then opened a clinic in Sydney, performing 150-180 skin cancer procedures per month until coming to the attention of regulators in 2018.

The NSW Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) accused him of putting eight patients at risk by operating on them inappropriately instead of referring them to a dermatologist, plastic surgeon or hospital.
