Is GP training in for another radical shake-up?

Australian Doctor takes a look at what is fueling the rumours which include suggestions RTOs are on the chopping block

“If rumours are true, there is about to be a seismic shift in how we train our next generation of GPs.”

This is the opening line from Dr Nicole Higgins’ message last week to thousands of GP supervisors across the country.

The new chair of the General Practice Supervisors Australia continues: “If the rumours are true, the Department of Health has temporarily halted transition of training to the colleges, supervisors and registrars are to be employed by the government and RTOs are endangered.”

The transition to which Dr Higgins is referring is the process of returning control of the GP training program back to the RACGP, something which for many has generated a feeling that something amiss in the world is finally being put right.
