GP training places increase to 2,100 but ACRRM says it’s misses out

The rural college says it needs 500 funded places a year, warning that delays could compound the workforce crisis.

The Federal Government has announced 2100 GP training places for 2028, but ACRRM says it is disappointed after missing out on the larger share of the rural allocation.

The rural college will receive 25 additional places in 2028, bringing its total allocation to 345, while the RACGP has secured 87 new places, including 37 rural places, a total of 1627.

Both colleges will also receive a 10% overfill allowance.

But while ACRRM president Dr Rod Martin welcomed the investment, he said he was disappointed by ACRRM’s comparatively smaller share and reiterated the need for a return-on-investment analysis comparing the two colleges’ programs.
