GP who diagnosed sexually transmitted Lyme disease admits he became ‘fixated’

A GP who treated a pregnant woman he believed had sexually transmitted Lyme disease has been suspended after admitting that his treatments were risky and expensive and that he had become “fixated” on the tick-borne illness.
Dr Peter Dobie was a well-known advocate for treating Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis), telling the ABC during an interview in 2016 that he felt a “moral obligation” to do so despite realising he risked disciplinary action.
But at a recent tribunal hearing, the Sydney-based GP said his beliefs had changed and he no longer treated Lyme disease, admitting that he had strayed beyond medical standards.
“I realise in hindsight that my management was unstructured, risky and expensive, particularly in the treatment of Lyme disease,” he wrote.
