GP’s advice to elderly patient in fatal fitness-to-drive case ignored: coroner

A 90-year-old man who died after a car accident ignored his GP’s advice to undergo a driving assessment following a new AF diagnosis, a Victorian coroner has heard.
Robin Banks died from pneumonia and other complications related to injuries he received when he drove onto the wrong side of the road and collided with another car in December 2019.
Mr Banks had had a history of blackouts, chronic kidney disease and coronary artery disease and for two years his family had raised concerns about his deteriorating health, asking him not to drive.
After his fitness to drive was not investigated while he was hospitalised for his AF diagnosis, the family appealed to his GP, raising the possibility that his licence could be revoked.
