Three brands of specialist infant formula have been recalled by the manufacturer over fears of microbial contamination.

Certain batches of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare powdered infant formula, all marketed by Abbott, have been linked to four infections in the US, including possibly contributing to a child’s death.

The products, mainly used for children aged 0-12 months with cow’s milk protein allergy or other gastrointestinal issues, may be contaminated with salmonella or cronobacter bacteria, authorities warn.

The FDA announced on Thursday that it had found several contaminated samples at an Abbott manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan.
