GPs billing for point-of-care HbA1c tests risk breaking Medicare rules: RACGP

The items were launched at the height of COVID-19.

GPs have claimed thousands of rebates for point-of-care HbA1c tests even though no GP practice has met a mandatory accreditation rule, the RACGP says.

The college warned members on Friday that the Department of Health and Aged Care had identified a “compliance risk” for MBS item 73812, which can be claimed three times a year per patient.

Medicare restricts the item to GP practices accredited against the RACGP’s standards for point-of-care testing (PoCT).

PoCT accreditation is in addition to normal practice accreditation, although both can be done at the same time.
