GPs, chiros and physios to be sent compliance letters on charging fees while bulk-billing

On Friday, 557 providers will be sent letters.

The latest Medicare compliance campaign is targeting hundreds of doctors and other health professionals for charging patients additional fees on top of bulk-billed consultations.

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing says it will mail letters on Friday to 557 providers — most prominently GPs, chiropractors and physiotherapists — warning them about practices such as charging subscription fees on bulk-billed consults or fees for consumables.

“The letters are educational in nature and intend to raise awareness with providers across the broader health provider community,” a department spokesperson said.

The RACGP, which receives advance notice of compliance campaigns, says about 100 GPs will receive the letter.
