GPs concerned as TikTok influencers encourage women to ditch hormonal contraceptives for period tracking apps

Dr Heather McNamee blamed the trend on ‘anti-contraceptive influencers’ on social media.

“I did an abortion clinic last week and every second young woman was using Flo.”

Cairns GP Dr Heather McNamee is talking about the popular health app that boasts more than 380 million global users.

“The app allegedly tells them when they’re fertile,” she told 6minutes.

While the UK-based Flo is designed to track their periods and warns against using its predictions as a form of contraception, this has not stopped women from relying on it to prevent pregnancy.
