GP’s lockdown plea: ‘My young patients are in anguish’

Dr Stacey Harris says she has prescribed antidepressants to patients as young as 12
Dr Stacey Harris.

“The children, young adults and new mothers I mainly treat are in anguish, despair and have no hope.”

Melbourne GP Dr Stacey Harris put these words in a letter to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews last week.

She was pleading for his government to fast track Melbourne’s reopening from lockdown for the sake of her patients, having witnessed firsthand the damage of “unhealthy social isolation” to their mental health.

“I have never in my 15 years of general practice seen such devastation with patients’ mental health,” Dr Harris wrote in the letter signed by other local GPs.
