GPs meet health officials in campaign to fund obesity drugs on PBS
A group of GPs is pushing the Federal Government to subsidise new obesity medications through the PBS for priority patients.
Perth GP Dr Mark Mellor said the group had drafted a proposal for the Department of Health, Disability, and Ageing, inspired by the UK’s decision to fund semaglutide and tirzepatide for specific cohorts.
The draft, shown to AusDoc, proposed prioritising adults with a BMI of 40 or more and one severe obesity-related health impairment, or three obesity-related health impairments that were serious but not severe.
It flagged a potentially lower BMI threshold for Indigenous patients or other vulnerable cohorts.
