This is England? GPs forced to get second opinion before referring to hospital specialists

The idea of digital “secondary consultations” has Australian proponents.

A fight over clinical autonomy is brewing in England after GPs were told they must seek a consultant’s advice before referring patients to hospital specialists.

The system, called Advice and Guidance (A&G), has been part of NHS England for 10 years, letting GPs seek advice from other specialists if they want to.

GPs were even offered an extra $38 per use of the service.

But from 1 April, under their new NHS contracts, contacting A&G before referring will be mandatory.
