GPs needing coronavirus tests face excessive delays, says former AMA president

There are calls for GPs to be given fast-tracked access to COVID-19 testing amid concerns doctors will be forced into unnecessary self-isolation because of delays in finding out if they have been infected.

The issue is being flagged by former AMA president Dr Kerryn Phelps, who says a GP colleague was told they would have to wait five days before being tested.

“They had developed cold-like symptoms over the weekend and had tried to do the right thing,” said Dr Phelps, a Sydney GP.

“The GP cancelled all of their patients on Monday but was then told there was a five-day waiting time to get tested.
