GPs can now claim an extra $56.75 for making home visits to vaccinate the elderly or patients with disabilities against COVID-19.

The Federal Government announced the new Medicare item, which must be bulk-billed, on Monday.

It means GPs will receive a one-off payment for each visit to a disability or aged care facility independent of how many patients they vaccinate.

They will also receive the payment for each home visit they make.
